Welcome, soldier. Your task today is very simple. The enemy has set up a base within a nearby forest, and has some valuable intel that we want. The higher-ups have tasked you to find this intel, and bring it back to us. You will be dropped into the middle of the forest, with nothing but your wits about you. (Budget's been tight as of late.) Good luck, soldier. Don't get lost.
Go To:
(text-colour:#8ce99a)[[Forest's Center]]You've arrived at the forest's center. Dense trees circle around you, with four clear paths leading in the four cardinal directions. In front of you, you see a large rock, almost double your height, blocking your view of anything else beyond it. To your left, a clearing, larger than the one you're currently standing in. On the right, a singular log rests upon the grassy floor. And behind you lies three stumps.

You go towards the large rock. It's a big rock, alright. It takes up a lot of the space in front of you, with seemingly no way around it. It might be better to backtrack from here.
(Use the Backtrack Arrow to go back)You find yourself in a clearing. A bit of sunlight flows in through the treetops, giving you a sense of safety. You have a mission to complete, however, so you ready yourself to pick another destination. Forward lies a few trees, with scattered branches lying along the ground. To your left, you can make out a hole in the ground. And to your right, a collection of small rocks. You can also go back to where you started, if you wish to do so.

(text-colour:#faa2c1)[[Forest's Center]]You come across a log, resting peacefully along the floor. You sit on it, to rest your legs for the journey ahead. After a bit, you get up and get moving. In the forward direction, a cliff drops off, disallowing you from seeing anything below. You think you can make the jump down, but aren't sure if you'll be able to get back up. Looking left, you see a notebook lying on the ground. To your right, more trees. Lots of them. Going back to the forest's center is also an option.

Actions:
(text-colour:#ffa8a8)[[Jump Off the Cliff]]You find three stumps, all lined up, as if it was asking for a small child to jump across them. You think back to your days before joining the army. Oh, how innocent you were. But now, you have a much greater purpose in life than jumping across stumps. Forward, there are some red mushrooms dotting the floor. To your left, a lot of trees, closely packed together. To your right, you can make out a hole in the ground. You can also go back to the center of the forest, if you want.

(text-colour:#faa2c1)[[Forest's Center]]You find yourself near some branches, all lying along the floor. Without thinking, you pick one up, and put them all in a neat pile. Satisfying. But, you're getting distracted. You must push onwards! You've got the clearing and a bush as your options. Every other avenue is blocked by many trees.
Go To:

(text-colour:#74c0fc)[[Clearing]]You come across a hole. You peer into it, and can't seem to see the bottom. Best to avoid it. Foward from the hole lies a deserted campsite and a few tents with much wear and tear. To your left, a few stumps. To the right, a small pond. And of course, the clearing behind you.

After that excursion, you look around and assess your options. Forwards, there is a cave. Left, a lone bush. Rightwards, the large rock you saw earlier. And behind you, the clearing.

(text-colour:#faa2c1)[[Clearing]]You turn to see a tattered notebook, lying on the floor. Curious, you pick it up, contemplating if you want to read it or not. Before deciding anything, you check where to go. Forwards lies a clump of blue mushrooms dotting a large tree. To the left, the large rock you saw earlier resides, standing tall over you as always. Rightwards, lies nothing of interest. And going back to the log is an option, too.
Note: You will leave the notebook behind when leaving the area.

(text-colour:#faa2c1)[[Log]]You take a leap of faith, and jump off the side of the cliff. You land about 10 feet down with minimal damage. Unfortunately for you, you didn't get any climbing training before being assigned, so you can't get back up. (Unless you use the Backtrack Arrow, but in this scenario, I'd rather you didn't.) Your only choice here is forward towards a rock embedded in the ground, trees on all sides block anything else.
Go To:
(text-colour:#8ce99a)[[Embedded Rock]]You go towards the campsite. What a terrible scene it is. The tent, once a place of shelter, torn by many years of human absence. A burnt-out campfire, never to be lit again. However, this only strengthens your resolve. This tent is like you, in a way. Trapped in this forest, with seemingly no escape from your duties. However, unlike this tent, you aren't going to give up. You're going to keep on keeping on, and find these enemies to the country and make them pay. Hole, pond, red mushroms. Which way are you going?
Go To:

(text-colour:#b197fc)[[Red Mushrooms]]You find a pond. Nothing too special about this pond at first glance. Looking further, however, you spot some silly ducks swimming in the water. They remind you of your childhood pet, who was also a duck. Oh, how you miss him. But your willpower will not be quashed by silly ducks. You're gonna finish this mission for those ducks, and all the ducks in the world! Unfortunately, doing that requires that you navigate to a hole or a broken campsite, which does take you away from the ducks. Very sad.

You continue to follow this trail of vines, until coming across a strange marking in the ground. It looks like four tally marks, all intertwining in various places. Before you can get a good look at it, however, you hear footsteps, deeper into the cave than you're willing to go. You rush out, back into the forest. It's a bit brighter out here, but the trees still block a majority of the sunlight.

The keypad is small, only about the size of your hand, 4 digits (1-4), and has 4 slots for numbers. Meaning, there's a code you need. The walls are made of solid steel, so there's no way you're getting in without that code. Unless you know it, you'll have to back to the strange lump and look for clues. I used to work for the agents who set up camp in this forest. They're doing some weird stuff in there, and I don't want to be a part of it anymore. It's too much for me, I can't go on. So, I'm running. And I'm leaving this notebook as a warning to anyone who comes here to run, too. But if you're stupid enough to want to stop them (and trust me, I do), then here's a tip. Pay attention to the mushrooms. The mushrooms are the key. Now leave this notebook where you found it, and start running.

(text-colour:#d0bfff)[[Potted Plant]]You duck under the table as many soldiers storm into the room. However, before they even shut off the alarm, they notice you under the table. You try to fight them off, and are able to successfully knock a few of them out and shut the door. However, now you're stuck in here. The soldiers kick in the door, and quickly knock you out. They slowly drag you out of the base, and bring you back to the forest's center.
Go To:
(text-colour:#8ce99a)[[Forest's Center]]You quickly duck under the large console, as the enemy bursts into the room. They go right up to the console, making you fear that they'll find you. However, the soldiers are so fixated on the console and shutting off the alarm, that they don't even notice you, right under their feet. You notice a vent in the wall beside you, similar to the one you saw earlier. Once the soliders leave, you decide to pull a tricky manuvuer.
You pull the vent cover off the wall as quietly as you can, and then you set off the alarm once again, crawl into the vent, and put the vent cover back on. The soldiers rush back in, very confused as to how the alarm went off a second time. You quickly and quietly crawl through the vent, away from the shouting and confusion.
Go To:
(text-colour:#8ce99a)[[Vent]]You hide behind the potted plant just as the enemy storms in. They quickly use the console to shut off the alarm. You keep your breathing steady, hoping your camoflauge will blend in with the plant. However, one guard very obviously spots you, and goes on the attack. You try to fight your way out, but the sheer amount of soldiers subdue you. They drag you out of the base, and take you all the way to a cliffiside. They throw you off, but you don't sustain any damage. You get back up, and find a rock sitting before you. It's your only option, due to the amount of trees around.

You've seen enough spy movies to know where this is going. You back up against the wall, and tread around the edges of the room. As you make your way to the intel, you think you see another pair of eyes, staring directly at you. You stare right back, refusing to exit eye contact. The eyes go away. You continue. You finally make it to the other side, and, still staying relatively in the darkness, try and grab it.
You got it.

"I honestly thought you could've gotten out," the man says. "You had it all going for you. Unfortunately, we had... more things going for us."
"Do you want to explain why you're here?" he asks.
You say nothing.
"Not much of a talker, I see," he replies. "That's okay. We know why you're here, anyway. 'Oh, but Mr. Quertee, why ask that question, then?' It's to measure what you know versus what I know."
So this is Mr. Quertee. Stupid name.
"We've already notified your superiors that we have you captured," Mr. Quertee says. "They sounded... disappointed in your efforts. Due to this, I have decided to give you..."
"A choice."
You look up at Mr. Quertee. What kind of a choice could this criminal possibly have for you?
"I am going to offer you one chance," Mr. Quertee says slyly. "One chance to join me. One chance to help me achieve greatness. What do you say?"
Offer:

(text-colour:#e599f7)[[Refuse.]]Mr. Quertee smiles. "I knew you had it in you," he says. "Untie him. We have much to accomplish."
Your hear footsteps behind you, and a rustling of rope. You're free.
"Now," Mr. Quertee says, "Let's continue onwards. Follow me."
You follow Mr. Quertee out of the interrogation room, and into a laboratory of some sort. Wires stretch across the ceiling, with tanks filled with some sort of liquid line the walls.
"You see," Mr. Quertee explains, "We have been trying to win this war for... quite some time. And in that time, we have developed some technology that isn't exactly... *approved* by our colleagues."
You look, and see people in some of the tanks, seemingly dead. Or... resting. You can't tell.
Mr. Quertee continues. "We want to develop super soldiers, plain and simple. But you must have already known that."
The two of you walk up a metallic staircase to the top of one of these tanks. This one seems to be filled with a different liquid than the rest.
"We've been wanting to test this new formula on someone, but none of the soldiers have been kind enough to agree. So... would you like to?"

(text-colour:#e599f7)[[ Refuse]]"Hmm," Mr. Quertee says as he looks down at you, with a hint of disappointment in this eyes. "I expected more of you. So be it."
Mr. Quertee raises his hand and snaps his fingers. You hear footsteps behind you, and feel a cold hunk of metal rest on the back of your skull.

[[Restart]]"Understandable." Mr. Quertee says. "I mean, I certainly wouldn't want to go in there. Now come along, let me show you more."

(text-colour:#ffc078)[[Grab Mr. Quertee]]"Alright, then," Mr. Quertee says, with a bit of surprise. "Now..."
Suddenly, Mr. Quertee reaches over, and shoves you in.
"Let's hope you can swim."
You black out the second you submerge.
"Interesting..." Mr. Quertee says. "Maybe we need less-"
You hear no more as your brain shuts down.
Ending 2: (text-colour:#d9480f)[Cog in the Machine]
[[Restart]]You contemplate everything you've seen today. Every experiment, every person killed in this stupid war, and you finally break. This is the end. You reach over, and grab the man responsible for all of this.
"I... should've seen this coming," Mr. Quertee says as you grab him.
"I suppose this is the end for me," Mr. Quertee says. "You were always a trickster, you."
You throw him into the tank, and as he falls, he says:
"Well played, brother. Well played."
The surrounding workers immediately know something is amiss. They turn to look up at the metal staircase, but you're long gone. You race back into the intel room, beat up the surrounding guards, grab the intel, not even worrying about the alarm. You just want out. You run, and you run, and you run, never looking back a single time. You can barely see where you're going, but you know you can't ever go back into that godforsaken forest. You keep running. You keep going until your legs give out, and you collapse in an alleyway. You find comfort in this, somehow. Even knowing what you just did, it fills you with pride that you're finally done.
Ending 3: (text-colour:#40c057)[Mission Complete]
[[Restart]]You follow Mr. Quertee back down the steps. "We need to get you ready for our next excursion," Mr, Quertee says. "We're launching a full-on attack on your former allies, and we want *you* to be leading the charge."
Mr. Quertee takes you to a storage closet, where he gives you a strange uniform, the likes you've never seen before.
"Go on," he says. "It won't bite."
You put on the uniform... and suddenly your vision goes completely dark, except for two small red dots. Somehow, you can still see everything around you, but your thoughts are no longer your own.
"As of now..." Mr. Quertee proudly proclaims, "You are now... one of us."
Ending 4: (text-colour:#22b8cf)[Traitor]
[[Restart]]This is not your directive. You weren't supposed to go this way. But there's no turning back now.
You run away. Away from the base, away from the forest, away from everything. Because you're done. You're sick and tired of war and fighting. You just want it to be over. And it can be. You run all the way to a familiar place. A place you once called home. Destroyed and abandoned and overgrown. You walk the forgotten halls until you reach your old room. There, you sit down, and finally rest in what feels like a long, long time.
